In case it's not clear. This is a XC90 with a Truck plate. I've never looked into what justification you have to provide for that.

Its so manufacturers can sidestep CAFE requirements. PT Cruisers were licenced as trucks as well. Wrap your head around that.

I always thought you had to have an open bed from the factory. This includes the El Camino, Subaru Baja, and H2 SUT, to name a few.

You just pay a little extra on your registration for the truck plates. they let you park in loading zones which is why most people get them. I have seen them on everything from Miatas to Minis.
